Ann Thompson 1803 by The Scarlet Letter

Oval cross stitched samplers are very unusual, and this one is a spectacular example. Ann was nine years old when she completed this sampler in 1803. Sprays of roses adorn the outer border and at the top is the crucified Christ with the verse: Behold the Saviour of mankind, nailed to the shameful tree. How vast the love that him inclin'd to bleed and die for me.
